A Different Way

This area will grow as we do.

Policies will reflect, upon broad and sensible consultation, the common sense approach that is best suited to the vast majority of Australians, over the longer term.

Our policies WILL CHANGE over time. Our difference is that we are open to policy shifts – as it should be. We are proud of the ability to reassess our position of topics because we understand that the world and Australia is not static. This is our strength.

This is not flip-flopping. We do not pretend to have a fixed position, to then deceitfully change that position. AND, we will publicly show you how our policy decisions are made and how they can change.

  • Education
  • Health
  • Housing
  • Science and Tech
  • Transport
  • The science is settled on human induced climate change. As a party that takes the overwhelming evidence of unbiased scientists and experts in their field seriously, this is not a topic of debate. We are not blind to the self-serving interests of various groups – it’s ok, they have the ability to advocate for their profits, it just isn’t in Australia’s long-term interests and we (unlike some others) see that. Common sense shows us the effects of climate change are hitting us hard – particularly in Australia. We will be advocating a position that helps Australia, not hinders it. There are opportunities to be seized upon, even if we are late to the party.

This position however COULD change. The whole point of this party is that we are open to the reality that there can be changes to the influences that make up our policy positions. Costs could change, new technologies developed, pressures arise, unexpected incidents occur. The Common Sense Party of Australia shows the influences that are factored into our policy making process, and these can change. This means, as a result, our policy positions can change, just as they should.

  • Strong and fair education is fundamental to Australia’s future. Beyond the future prospects of the individual, critical thinking skills underpin a healthy democracy and this means an educated society is a more nationally secure one.
  • There are models of fair education funding and curriculum which, devised by experts in the field, should be the model Australia follows. It just makes common sense that we fund and teach education in a fair and needs based way. Education is about getting everyone up to an agreeable standard. For some, this will require more resources. The public purse is there for that purpose as we say as a nation that that is what we want.

  • Is health insurance, insurance? Most Australian’s know insurance to be “if something goes wrong, you pay an excess, and the insurance pays the rest.” But with health insurance, it seems to be you get paid a fraction of what it costs. That’s not insurance – it’s a discount booklet of coupons. What’s worse is that it makes health a business – and businesses are there to serve one thing – profit. This doesn’t seem like common sense at all. We would look into ways of making our public funded health system adequate for all of our health needs. The private health system should be based on a model of supplement not replacement.

  • We would start of by asking the Parliamentary Library to investigate how many households there are in Australia and compare this to the number of dwellings. This is a complex beast – but having empty homes just is not common sense and people should not benefit from tax advantages from owning an empty dwelling.

  • Australia used to be a phenomenal developer of science and technology. There’s a reasonable chance you are reading this information that has passed through a WiFi router – an Australian (CSIRO) development. Proper investment in Science and Technology is not a cost – it’s an investment. With proper funding, we could be a powerhouse in scientific inventions once again. But trust is required. No more science denial, blind to the agendas of those peddling doubt. Science fact is where we stand.

  • Who builds a new airport without including a train line to it? Or how about a junction between two motorways without giving access to the direction going to and from the city? The Common Sense has gone missing in action here. One must ask why these decisions are made – and the answer always comes back to private companies who’s onus is to profit.
  • We would ensure that decisions are made factoring in the full benefits to Australians, for the long-term. It is clearly more expensive to retrofit improvements rather than build it properly at the time of construction.

Here’s a brief idea on some other ways we are leaning

  • Political donations to be illegal. Funding of political parties to be from the public purse. This cost will be minuscule compared to the corruptions that have led to billions of dollars being spent and lost due to favourable deals.
  • Actual legal consequences for a party AND a politician who state with supposed factuality one position prior to an election, then subsequently do the complete opposite after, without justification. Saying “There will be no cuts to xxxx, x, xxx, xxx,” followed by cuts those exact areas based on clearly false and trumped up pretexts, are insulting and should be illegal. There needs to be legal and real financial penalties. Yes, decisions change based on circumstance – that is the difference with this party – but that is different to full out lies to just get elected.
  • Giving real teeth to regulators. Regulators need to be able to enforce decisions, not just write stern letters and mere suggestions.
  • Open up the books with actual independent auditing by treasury. A party should no longer be able to just say “but the now opposition left us in a completely different financial position to what we thought we were in, and therefore what we said when we were in opposition we will no longer be able to do.”
  • Install a Federal ICAC.
